In their attempt to increase their short-term profits, manufacturers produced lower quality products with shorter life spans and higher maintenance requirements. Even long-standing high-quality manufacturers lowered their hard-acquired standards in order to produce more competitive products and increase their short-term profit margins. As a direct consequence, the design and production qualities of yachts demonstrate significant variations.

The wide range of products available today and the rapid changes in design, technology and marketing, it has become extremely difficult even for an experienced yachtsman to select a yacht with the design, quality and durability that will meet his expectations.
